RESUMO

Introduction Poor diet habits and inadequate intake of nutrients are a concern in the elderly. Nutritional education with guidance may improve the results of the treatment of vertigo. Objective Evaluate the presence of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) associated with feeding habits. Methods Cross-sectional study with elderly people living independently. We evaluated nutritional habits through themethod of dietary 24-hour recall andmanipulation of Dix-Hallpike. Results Based on a sample of 487 individuals, 117 had BPPV. Among the 117 elderly patients with BPPV, 37 (31.62%) had inadequate feeding. From those 370 individuals without BPPV, 97 (26.21%) had inappropriate feeding. No significant association between nutritional habits and BPPV in the total population was observed (p = 0.3064). However, there was significant relation between BPPV and inadequate carbohydrate intake (p = 0.0419) and insufficient fiber intake (p = 0.03), and the diet of these subjects was rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (p = 0.0084). Conclusion These data correlate with the dyslipidemia and hypertriglyceridemia status, making it extremely important to reduce the intake of fats and carbohydrates and increase the fiber intake to stabilize triglycerides and thus minimize harmful effects on the inner ear. Food readjustment is suggested in patients with BPPV, along with the work of a multidisciplinary team to improve the quality of the elderly.(AU)

ABSTRACT Purpose: To perform a comparative analysis of the balance of subjects with isolated vertigo and dizziness associated with hearing loss. Methods: The sample consisted of 29 patients with peripheral vertigo diagnosis selected by non-probabilistic sampling and convenience aged between 45 and 64 years. The diagnostic survey to hearing evaluation consisted of audiological anamnesis and assessment of postural balance; it was made in force platform, in the bipedal and semi tandem positions with open eyes. The analyzed balance parameters were: ellipse area, center of pressure in square centimeters, average speed in centimeters per second and average frequency, in Hertz, of swaying in both directions of movement: anteroposterior and mediolateral. Results: As for the population in general, the comparison between individuals with and without hearing loss has not shown to be there any damage to the maintenance of postural balance. There was difference in women in the speed parameter in mediolateral direction. Conclusion: Although no differences have been found which might have characterized a correlation between hearing loss and balance in patients, there was a worse performance in postural balance of women with vertigo associated with hearing loss in the mediolateral parameter.

Introduction: The compressive garments are part of outpatient treatment of deep burns. Often patients end up not using the compression garment mainly due to discomfort, shame and ignorance of the importance of using. Objective: To describe the process of building an educational video on the importance of using the compression garment for individuals who have suffered burns. Methods: The construction of educational material occurred in the following steps: literature review, data analysis, drafting and review script and shooting of three patients and two parents and/or guardians in the Outpatient Burn Treatment Center University Hospital of the State University of Londrina (CTQ/HU/UEL) and editing the video. Results: An educational video that addresses the hypertrophic scarring, the placement of the compression garment, clarification of doubts and care tips was obtained. Conclusion: The development of educational technologies targeted to the treatment of burn victim patient is a great challenge and there is an urgent need to develop new materials.
